Officially one week from the start of NaNoWriMo and I’ve forced myself to come to a decision about what to write. If you read my last post you’ll know that after realizing the idea I was intending to run with wasn’t quite fully baked, I was debating between two alternate options. One, a re-write and continuation of a story from over a year ago – one that truthfully, I do love. The characters are there, fully formed and I have at least a skeleton outline of the plot. The second, a sort-of spinoff story set in the same universe as option #1, which while less fully formed, has enough bones to expand on as I plan this week and also has that “new, shiny” effect.
So, which did I choose?
Option #2, which will hereafter be known as “The Six Soldiers of Fortune.”
The Six Soldiers of Fortune
“There was once a man who was a Jack-of-all-trades; he had served in the war, and had been brave and bold, but at the end of it he was sent about his business, with three farthings and his discharge. “I am not going to stand this,” said he; “wait till I find the right man to help me, and the king shall give me all the treasures of his kingdom before he has done with me.””
Based on the Brothers’ Grimm story, the story follows a veteran of a recent galactic war, who like almost all conscripts was unceremoniously released from service when the war abruptly ended. She gathers a group of five other young veterans, physically and mentally altered by their service to the Union. Together, they seek their due from the Union. It’s an adventure story, a story about healing, and a story about justice.
Why did I choose this one? I couldn’t resist the idea of the new and shiny story, despite really loving my old story. And unlike the idea I had previously been toying with (The Fog), Six Soldiers has bones for me to work with. I did some character brainstorming last night and have basic ideas for conflict. The Fog had a cool concept, but since I waited until the last minute to start planning, I don’t think I’ll have enough time to properly brainstorm and develop a plot before I begin drafting like mad on November 1.
I can’t wait for my second true attempt at NaNoWriMo. Anyone else out there writing? You can add me as a buddy, username: thegirlsdistracted. I plan to regularly update this blog throughout November to keep myself honest about my progress. Until then? You’ll find me glued to my seat, diligently plotting this book…or perhaps watching all those new Fall TV shows I’ve gotten sucked into. Your guess is as good as mine.
